Saphion: a classy sans font that was just released!
I browse a lot of unseemly places to bring you these posts.
I visit the seediest corners of Behance. The darkest back-alleys of dribbble. Sometimes I take momentary respite in the affluent neighborhoods of Typewolf and Design Cuts. And as soon as I feel ready, I dive into the filth-laden favelas of Reddit.
It was there that I met u/Lurinzoo, the type designer that gave us Saphion. I passed him eight bucks under the sleazy, cum-and-cocaine-stained table and ran away with the goods before the Comic Thugs could get their silly, flamboyant hands on me.
I unpacked the package and what I found inside surprised me. No, it wasn’t an amputated finger. I mean, it was, but there was also a classy sans accompanying the gruesome appendage.
Saphion is a nice sans-serif display font that keeps its legibility at lower point sizes. This is what the designer himself has to say about the font
Saphion is based on the idea of mixing the old-style Latin serifs and turning it to a modern sans that exudes elegance, romance, classic, and luxury that isn't too intimidating.
People on the r/typography subreddit have commented on the font’s similarity to the New Yorker typeface, and they kinda have a point, but I honestly think that Saphion is considerably less ornate and, thusly, more flexible.
For me, the most enchanting part of Saphion is its unpretentious classiness and the cool discretionary ligatures.
Do you want cons? I got cons, too! It comes in only a single weight and there are no matching italics.
Here’s a quick design I made with Saphion to showcase how good it looks:
You can get Saphion HERE by paying with a pay-what-you-want-as-long-as-it’s-over-$8 model.
