The Book Covers Project, Part 1: On This Day in The Wars of the Roses (Day 2)

Looking at yesterday’s attempt at a cover (below) I decided that, while it looks good, it also looks like a nonfiction cover. The blackletter Chomsky font only serves to amplify this impression, as it looks too much like The New York Times masthead font. Not surprising, considering the intention of its designer, as quoted here

A newspaper masthead font in the style of the New York Times masthead.

Yesterday’s attempt.

Yesterday’s attempt.

For that reason, I decided to go in a different direction for today’s attempt. Instead of using Chomsky, I thought that I could use the Gallos Uncial style of the Gallos family.

Uncials are a category of typefaces used between the 4th and 8th century. Their defining feature is the shortness of their ascenders and descenders. While the Wars of the Roses took place much later than that, Gallos Uncial still looks pretty appropriate.

Here’s a 3D mockup of the cover I ended up creating today. I’m still not 100% happy with this one, but maybe some tinkering or throwing this in the trash and creating a new one tomorrow will save the day!

Check in tomorrow to check out the last cover design I’ll be creating for this book!
