The Book Covers Project, Part 1: On This Day in The Wars of the Roses (Day 3)
Welcome to Day 3 of Book Cover One, which is a sentence I never thought I’d write.
I ended up creating a third book cover concept for the”On This Day in The Wars of the Roses” which I kinda like:
I ended up using Chomsky again (the blackletter font) for the title, since Dan let me know that the book is actually nonfiction, and not historical fiction based on the Wars of the Roses.
Increasing the size of the “Wars of the Roses” text and making it red (blood!) helped it stand out from the rest of the black-and-white cover which (if you’ll forgive the immodesty) is a stroke of genius. Mama always told me I was a bright one.
All of this is built around the very cool photo of a sword I got from Unsplash. The photo was originally in color, and I honestly don’t know what came over me that made me decide to turn it monochromatic, but I think it (in combination with the red color) helps create a lot of contrast.
Using Chomsky to write Dan’s name would make the cover too boring and samey, so I decided to use the bold weight of Sawton Circular, my favorite foundry’s newest font, to set the text for the name. As for the line above the name? I just thought it looked cool.
I still have no idea if Dan likes this one, but it’s the one I like the most. I wish that I had a small tagline or very short description to add somewhere on the cover, so I contacted Dan and asked him if he could provide me with one.
Tomorrow is the last day of Part 1. Come back to see which one is Dan’s favorite!
