Finos by Iordanis Passas: a retro-styled display sans with (yes!) greek characters

I’ll be honest here, I was about to post a review to a completely different display typeface, but then I happened upon Finos and nostalgia took ahold me.

Now, any middle-aged (or older) Greek person will be familiar with Finos Film, a Greek film production company operating during what is affectionally called “the Golden Age of Greek cinema”, and this typeface aims to recreate the vintage vibe of that era’s signage and typography.

Does it succeed?

Yes. Yes, it does. This is a typeface with one weight and no italics, and it does what it should do perfectly. It looks good, it captures the era and it makes guys like me long for a simpler time, a time when pandemics were a thing only in Terry Gilliam’s head and hydrogenated vegetable oils tasted more like butter.

Here’s today’s five-minute design, an album cover for an imaginary band’s record.
