Kollektif by Dogu Kaya: Avenir, Futura and Gotham Walk Into a Bar

Geometric sans-serif.

It’s not easy to stand out if you’re one of those guys. On the one hand, you have gorgeous, established typefaces like Gotham, Avenir and Futura dominating the landscape and, on the other hand, you have a septic tank of low-effort clones and derivatives.

Is there anything between those two hands?

Sure. Even though it’s sometimes difficult to sniff them out, there are great fonts with character to be found if you’re willing to go looking, and some of them can be had for free.

In fact, the only reason I came upon today’s typeface is because I went looking when I was in need of a nice-looking body text sans. The typeface had to have at least two weights and matching italics and look nice. This had me sifting through Fontesk in search of a typeface that fulfilled those criteria, and, truth be told, I found a few.

The one that really stood out to me was Kollektif. Kollektif looks lovely and has exactly two weights and matching italics. And here’s my five-minute design (using a photo I took, too) that’ll help you get an idea of what it looks like

Kollektif is available for free at Brave New Fonts and you can use it for both personal and commercial projects. While you’re there, also check out Type02, which is also free and also looks great, although it’s meant to be used in display scenarios anyway.
