Slayray by Maulana Creative: a bouncy, cartoony display sans

If you’re wondering how I find new fonts to review, wonder no more. With the exception of the very rare case that a type designer will approach me and ask me if I want to review their font (to which the answer has always been “yes” so far, so go ahead and send me an email if you’re interested), I go to my favorite design vendor sites (myfonts.com, creativemarket.com, designcuts.com) and apply the “New” filter to check out new releases. I also browse Behance quite a lot, and many times a day it will proactively send me notifications regarding typefaces.

Slayray came into my life the latter way: there I was, checking out the latest issue of Philosophy For The Extremely Cultured Man (just kidding, I was reading an article about flyfishing for dummies) when I got a notification on my phone, telling me to check it out. Seeing that I will do anything The Phone Overlord asks of me (with the exception of enabling Extreme Battery Saver mode, what am I, a vegan?) I tapped the notification and entered a world of whimsy and wonder.

As soon as I saw the bouncy, cartoony letterforms of Slayray, I knew I had to do something cute, so I opened up my newest obsession, an art-generating AI called Midjourney, and asked it to create an image of a boy and a girl sliding down a cosmic slide in the style of Adventure Time, and make it extra colorful, STAT.

Here are the results of combining Slayray with one of the illustrations that MJ created

Neat, I think you’ll agree.

Slayray comes in one weight/style, with no italics. It looks very cute, and it’s perfect for book covers and posters. What really sets it apart are its ligatures. There are not that many, but the ones that are there lend it a very organic feeling.

I have noticed some issues with the default kerning, but that may be a bug in my software (Affinity Designer).

Slayray costs $14 and you can get it HERE.
