The Book Cover Project: Introduction

About a month ago, I decided that I’d create five covers for imaginary books and post them on the blog, analyzing the creative process behind each cover in the process.

I then decided that there was no need for me to make up book titles: lots of authors are struggling to find a decent cover for their work, so I visited an authorcentric group on Facebook that I also frequent and asked for submissions. I managed to get four people to sign up for a free cover before having my thread unceremoniously deleted because of ‘self-promotion’.

I couldn’t say this in the group but, hey, this is my turf, so I’ll just go ahead and say how I feel about it here: it was massively unfair. What? You expected profanity? I don’t do that shit anymore, motherfucker.

Here’s the first cover in the series. This one is for my own upcoming book “It Never Brains!”, a funny zombie mystery novella. The cover uses Dreadful (one of my favorite display fonts ever) and its extras.

Many people have commented on how much they like the style of the cover and I don’t blame them: I’m pretty fuckin’ awesome.

I don’t want to spoil the story, so I won’t go into the plot but, clearly, Dreadful was made for these things. The font is layered so you can get different effects by stacking various styles, and it has a ton of extras. In fact, my plan is to use Dreadful for the covers of the entire 4-book series.

The “Summertale, Book 1” part uses Charoe, another one of my favorite display fonts. I have no idea why I thought that Dreadful and Charoe would make a good pair, but it turns out I was right. Again. Get used to it, bitches.

You can download Dreadful HERE and Charoe HERE.
