Glacial Indifference: a lovely sans that’s just what we need in this weather.

You may have noticed that I don't review a lot of non-display sans-serifs on this blog.

There's a reason for that and the reason is this: if we're being honest with ourselves, body text sans-serifs start blending into each other after a while.

Yes, you got your grotesques, your geometrics and your humanist but in the end what you're left with is variations on Helvetica, Gotham, Futura and Whitney. I realize that's a loaded, controversial statement but it's not like you can take me to court over it. You can make a case against it on the comments, though.

So, does Glacial Indifference break the mold and do something really groundbreaking? Well, not really. However, as you already know if you've read my book Clothes For Language (if you haven't, what are you doing with your life?) the shape of the letterforms is not even half of what a nice typeface is about.

First of all, Glacial Indifference is open source, which means that anyone can join the project. This may not sound interesting to you as a designer, but the second benefit is a direct benefit of its open-sourceness: it has regular and bold weights and the regular weight also has matching italics. That should be enough to set pretty much any text.

Sure, I'd love some small caps to go along with the rest of the fonts but that's maybe asking too much of a free font. But there you have it: a stunning sans-serif with big counters and a bigger ❤️, yours for free. What more could you ask for?
